At a time when companies are closing down, longtime employees are being laid off, unemployed people are struggling to create their own opportunities, and the market is uncertain, either you struggle to stay afloat or you rise above. Falling down to your business’ demise should never be an option.

Here are some simple, helpful ways in order for you to save your business from crumbling down:

1. Expand your network. If collaborating with people coming from various fields is something you didn’t usually do before, it’s about time that you do so if only to widen your learning and your business horizon. Collaborations lead you to new and even unexpected opportunities. Most of the time, working with others against working alone gives better results for each other’s businesses.

2. Keep your optimism. In times like this, it is easy to lose hope. But if you do, prepare to see that attitude affect the health of your business. Optimism gives you the drive to do more and leads you to more possibilities, alternatives and solutions. Optimism also has a good effect on your employees. If they see in their employer that hope floats for the company, they will stay positive and keep doing their work well.

3. See the challenge, not the problem. Nothing is ever permanent. The unfavorable things that come will soon pass. That’s why if you see the economic situation as a lasting problem for your business, you may do nothing about it. But if you see this situation as a challenge, it means you will look for ways to do something about it. You will make better use of your skills, time, and resources than ever before until such time that opportunities and more buyers will come to you.

4. Forge new ties. Forging partnerships with trusted and established brands that are connected to your target market will give you more exposure and more chances for increased cash flow. Also, associating your company with related local government groups and community organizations in your area will help build your business credibility as you share and teach them your expertise.

5. Same value, lower prices. The trick to attract more people to go for your products or services during lean times is to offer them lower prices, of course without reducing the value, for a specific period of time. This gives them the opportunity to avail of your product or service while it is discounted. Cut the prices of your products that are most useful to your market. This way, money will keep coming in, and you will have more buyers as well.

6. Give rewards. From time to time, give your buyers perks or incentives, especially your longtime buyers. This will give them the impression that you value their loyalty, and increase the probability they will tell their friends and acquaintances about your business.

7. Cut down on costly operating costs. Conduct an audit on your company equipment, materials, licenses and even energy use. If you think you can operate your business for less in another location, you may consider relocating if this would not seriously affect your business and clients.

In all these, the key word is practicality for the sake of keeping your business in business.

Are you currently settled in a state that is small business-friendly? Or are you thinking of transferring your business to a state that is more supportive of amateur entrepreneurs? Do you seriously believe that location can really stop your business from growing?

Know the best place to start your business. Conduct a survey of your target destination. Location is one of the key ingredients for success, albeit it is not the only one.

Factors to Consider During Location Hunting

Level of taxes on corporate income, personal income and capital gains is one factor to consider in looking for a good business location. Lowest-leveled states are said to be better soils for start-up entrepreneurs. The number of bureaucrats (both for state and local), the crime rates, the minimum wage costs, right-to-work status are necessary considerations, not to mention the roles recreation opportunities, business environment and tourism play. Of course, the population growth factor should be a major consideration when deciding on a location for your business.

Best Spots for Small Enterprising

It is no guarantee that big cities are surefire great picks for small businesses. South Dakota, Alabama, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Texas, Mississippi, and Tennessee are some of the states small businessmen may consider.

Population-wise, Miami holds the largest market in national standings. There may be a concentration of small businesses in the area yet this didn’t hinder its growth. Tourism-wise, Las Vegas and Orlando top the list. As a matter of fact, Las Vegas holds the crown for the fastest growing places based on total numbers of small businesses. Statistics show that in three years, it has grown by around 15.7%. Orlando came next. Actually, all of Florida is a hit – be it Miami, Orlando or Jacksonville.

Slow-growing areas like Minneapolis-St Paul, Providence and Seattle do have cold climates yet they are still good prospective locations for small businesses. Credit should be given to their well-educated work forces. However, do you know which state was hailed by both Money Magazine and Forbes Magazine as the best spot? It’s Bellevue, Washington. Housing may be expensive here but it is a city in transition and is thus full of small business opportunities.

At the other end of the spectrum, Memphis got a less than favorable feedback. By all indications, it seems to possess all the negative characteristics for business. Established small businesses in the area account for only one-third of the number of small businesses in Miami. Furthermore, the growth rate of small businesses is quite opposite that of Las Vegas. It has also been reported that its local employment has been flat since the 90s.

Money Magazine has a list of its top 100 best cities for starting small businesses. Forbes Magazine has its own list as well. If you think about it, every place has its pluses and minuses. Choosing the place where you will reside and start a business is still you decision. Location, after all, is just one of the ingredients for business success. You can always make a place the best business spot for you. You only need the will to make it happen!

There is no knowledge that isn’t power, and FreeCreditReport.com is there for precisely that purpose: empowerment.

What is one word that everyone wants? We’ll give you a hint: it begins with the letter F (No, it’s not that F word. Get your mind out of the gutter.). Actually, it’s the word “free.”

Face it: people will jump at almost anything that’s offered gratis. Extra, specialized knowledge is no exception. And while the best things in life are free, the really good stuff seems to be few and far between. That is, unless you know where to look.

Introducing FreeCreditReport.com, designed to help liberate you from the burden of credit ignorance. There is no knowledge that isn’t power, and FreeCreditReport.com is there for precisely that purpose: empowerment.

In a nutshell, FreeCreditReport.com helps you keep a close eye on your report from the Big Three of credit bureaus: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian – the last of which is actually behind the service. Signing up for it will net you a host of privileges, including e-mail alerts of important changes and warning signs of possible identity thieves. In fact, Experian will grant you both a credit report and a credit score – absolutely free—just for trying out FreeCreditReport.com.

Besides those perks, subscribers also get Experian’s US$ 50,000 guarantee, otherwise known as the Triple Advantage. In simple terms, you can expect a reimbursement from a third party called ConsumerInfo.com of up to fifty grand under certain conditions. The company will only pay you in the unfortunate event that someone poses as you and uses your confidential information without your knowledge or consent.

Should you opt to pay for membership, you’ll be able to avail of credit scores and a lifetime supply of printable credit reports courtesy of Experian.

Pros: It sounds misleading, sure, but the free credit score report and the free credit report upon registration are just the hors d’ oeuvres before the main course. You get such goodies as multiple copies of your credit reports and online access 24/7. Unlike the extra service appended to the default annual credit program, this one doesn’t spam your e-mail inbox like there’s no tomorrow. Oh, and did we mention you get a response from them within the same day that you send them e-mail?

If you want quick access to your credit reports and credit scores plus a guitar serenade on the side, then FreeCreditReport.com is the way to go.

Cons: It’s true. The service is free…for seven days, that is. As with any service, you’ll have to shell out a fee (US$14.95 after a week of and every month thereafter) after the trial period ends, unless you cancel your membership. Note that that is only the initial fee. The other, more comprehensive option of three scores and credit scores each will cost you US$39.95. Fortunately, FreeCreditReport.com is very transparent about the fees you’ll need to pay.

Potential subscribers, take note: after you sign up for the trial period, you may actually have to wait a few days before credit monitoring actually begins. Some “wait training” is definitely in order. Also, if you’re a resident of New York, you are unfortunately not qualified for the Triple Advantage promo, simply because restrictions in New York state law forbid you from doing so. Bummer.
